About the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

The MMMF was founded in 1981 to honor the memory of Margaret Craig McNamara (1915-1981) by supporting her goal of educating women.

Mission Statement

The MMMF provides grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries.

Board, Staff, Advisors

The MMMF’s Board of Directors has fifteen members from the World Bank, IMF and Inter-American Development Bank communities. From the beginning, Board members and other volunteers conducted the principal fund-raising activities, grant selection and finances. Today, MMMF has one part-time staff member, a Coordinator, and volunteers continue to carry out the bulk of activities. A formal nominating procedure replenishes the Board of Directors from year to year, and proposes advisors to the Board. Consult the list...

Selection Committees

MMMF Selection Committees and Selection Panels – one set for the US/Canada program and a separate set for South Africa -- are composed of volunteers from the World Bank community (and potentially the IMF and IDB).  The members are approved by the MMMF board but the committees and panels operate independently of the Board.  Their task is to conduct the grant selection processes, as well as to help manage the website used by applicants and to help disseminate information to the universities about the MMMF programs.  The Committees conduct the first two stages of the selection processes, while the Panels (which bring in fresh members from Bank staff/retirees) participate in selecting the finalists.
