Monica Ayieko

Monica was Educated at Egerton College in Kenya and at the University of Maryland (BS in l982). As an extension worker in the Ministry of Agriculture, she taught courses in home economics and agriculture for women and rural young people. She joined the faculty of Egerton College and managed outreach programs for rural women. She received a USAID grant to study at the University of Illinois in l988; received the MS and enrolled in the PhD program. Her dissertation compares the distribution of agricultural work between men and women in two Kenyan villages. She joined the staff of the Winrock Foundation in Nairobi in l992 where she trains women leaders in agriculture throughout East Africa. She will complete her dissertation in the fall of l994 and receive her degree in June 1995. She will return to Kenya and seek employment. She has left her position at Egerton University. |

Mary Buenavista
The Philippines

Mary is on leave from the Visayas State College of Agriculture where she had participated in research and extension activities, mostly related to women. Her dissertation was to be a study of the impact of prawn farming on Philippine families in two farming communities. Her interest shifted into sustainable agricultural practice, and her dissertation was about the role of social organization in a community (especially its women) as an input to sustainable agriculture. She did additional research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute to support herself and went for 6 months to the Philippines to participate in the project described.

Sumila Gulyani
India
PhD Architecture
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Sumila trained in architecture in India and worked in New Delhi for a non-profit organization where she designed a resettlement project for 600 families. Her interest in design work on housing for low-income families took her to MIT.
As a summer intern at the World Bank, she worked on another resettlement project in India. She remained at the Bank to do similar project work in India and elsewhere. She plans to return to India to set up her own design firm.

Philippa Mudido

Resident Pediatrics
University of Louisville
Philippa trained as a physician at Makerere University in Kampala and practiced pediatrics in 2 Kampala hospitals. She came to the US in l987 and did a residency in pediatrics through the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She enrolled in a special 2-year program in Louisville on children's infectious diseases, focusing on AIDS. She completed that program and passed Board exams in Nov. 1994. She went to a hospital in Cleveland (Case Western Reserve Univ.) for a clinical and research program on children with AIDS. She plans to return to Uganda in the fall of l994, where AIDS has reached epidemic proportions. |

Ruphina Okeyo

Ruphina was educated at Egerton College in Njoro, Kenya. She worked as an agriculture extension worker and technical officer in the Ministry of Agriculture. She came to the US in l986 to study nutrition and received a BS and MS at the University of Mississippi. She transferred to Virginia to complete the PhD in nutrition and was there l989 to l982. Her dissertation relates to ways of satisfying nutritional needs of rural women and children; received a Rockefeller Grant to do field research in l993; went to Kenya in October l994. She will return to the US to complete her study in l995. She wants to combine research, teaching, and rural outreach. |
